Folate, L-Methylfolate with Neural Tube Defects

Folate is commonly taken as a supplement during pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Neural tube defects are birth defects of the brain, spine or spinal cord. They develop during the first month of pregnancy, usually before a woman knows she is pregnant.
The two most common neural tube defects are spina bifida (characterized by an undeveloped spine) and anencephaly (missing major parts of the brain, skull, and scalp).
Folate, L-Methylfolate with Neural Tube Defects
Low folate levels during pregnancy are associated with at least half of neural tube defects. The American Academy of Pediatrics says a daily intake of 400 micrograms of folate can reduce the risk of these deficiencies by 50 percent.

Folate supplementation is considered the first line of defense against inherited birth defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly.

Since 1998,  has been added to cereals, baked goods and other foods to further reduce the risk of neural tube defects. At least 80 countries have taken similar measures.

But we recommend:
Magnafolate® L-Methylfolate—maximizes the supplementation delivering a "finished" folate the body can immediately use without any kind of metabolization.
