5-MTHF and L-Methylfolate

5-MTHF is another form of folic acid supplement. In the United States, about 25% of Hispanics, 10%-15% of whites and 6% of African Americans have a genetic variation called MTHFR C677T. This variation further affects the ability to metabolize folic acid.

People with C677T mutations are at increased risk for NTD infants. Some sources suggested supplementation with MTHF instead of folic acid.
