Neural tube defects are congenital defects in the brain, spine or spinal cord. They develop in the first month of pregnancy, usually before women even know they are pregnant.
The two most common neural tube defects are spina bifida (characterized by an undeveloped spine) and anencephaly (loss of major parts of the brain, skull, and scalp).
Low levels of folate during pregnancy are associated with at least half of neural tube defects. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that taking 400 micrograms (MCG) of folate a day can reduce the risk of these defects by 50%.

Folate supplements are considered to be the first line of defense against genetic congenital defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly.
Since 1998, folate has been added to Cereals, baked goods and other foods to further reduce the risk of neural tube defects. At least 80 countries have adopted similar measures.
Magnafolate® L-Methylfolate—maximizes the supplementation delivering a "finished" folate the body can immediately use without any kind of metabolization.
It can better supplement the folate that the body lacks.
