Calcium L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), a naturally occurring salt-forming methyl derivative of folic acid, also known as L-methylfolate, is the biologically active and functional form of folic acid* and is more readily absorbed than regular folic acid. The two main metabolic pathways in which ordinary folate must be converted to L-methylfolate in order to participate are methylation and DNA synthesis, and the free form of folate normally found in human plasma and cells* is 5-MTHF.
