Classification of folate and the activity profile of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate

Folate can be classified according to its source as natural folate and synthetic folic acid, and according to its activity as inactive folic acid and active folate.
Inactive folic acid is folate that is not physiologically active in itself and refers exclusively to synthetic folic acid. In contrast, active folate is folate that is physiologically active in its own right and can be absorbed and used directly without metabolic processes.
