They can be found in capsules, tablets, soft caps, chewable tablets and gels.
Usual doses are 400 to 800 micrograms for adult supplements and 200 to 400 micrograms for children's multivitamins. Folic acid can be taken with food, but it is better absorbed on an empty stomach.

According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, only about 85 percent of folate is available in the blood if taken with food. Almost 100% of folic acid will become bioavailable if not eaten.
It is generally recommended that you take a B-complex vitamin supplement rather than taking the B vitamins alone. Doing so may cause imbalances and/or mask deficiency symptoms. For example, folate supplements can sometimes mask a potentially dangerous B12 deficiency.
But we recommend:
Magnafolate® L-Methylfolate—maximizes the supplementation delivering a "finished" folate the body can immediately use without any kind of metabolization.
