In this case, they think we should pay more attention to vitamin B-12 and L-Methylfolate deficiency.
After analyzing data collected from more than 5000 participants, the researchers found that up to one eighth of the elderly had low or deficient vitamin B-12 levels and one seventh had low or deficient L-Methylfolate levels.
In addition, the prevalence of insufficient L-Methylfolate levels appears to increase with age, from 14% of people aged 50-60 to 23% of participants over 80.

Low levels of L-Methylfolate are also found mainly in people with smoking habits, obesity or living alone. Similar conclusions were reached for B-12 deficiency, which was most common among smokers (14% of cases), people living alone (14.3% of cases) and people with low socio-economic backgrounds (13%).
"There are significant differences in the prevalence of deficiency among different lifestyle factors, such as obesity and smoking, both of which are modifiable risk factors," Dr. Laird explained.
